Ma Dong-Hyun set to return at UFC Fight Night Shenzhen
South Korean slugger Ma Dong-Hyun has been pitted against Scott Holtzman in a lightweight contest at UFC Fight Night Shenzhen in Shenzhen on August 31st.
Ma (16-9), formerly known as Kim Dong-Hyun, had a rocky start to his UFC career with two consecutive TKO losses to Dominique Steele and Polo Reyes. Between late 2016 to early 2018, he was able to turn the tide by knocking off three straight opponents, most notably Takanori Gomi at UFC Fight Night 117 in Japan.
After obtaining a split decision win over Damien Brown in Perth, he returned to Australia at UFC 234 earlier this year and took on Devonte Smith. The 30-year-old was stung early and finished with devastating strikes to end his streak.
Holtzman, likewise, had a three-fight run broken in his last appearance in the Octagon. At UFC on ESPN 1 in February he was outclassed by Nik Lentz and lost on the scorecards via unanimous decision.
There is only one other fight official for the event which is a women’s flyweight bout between Wu Yanan (10-2) and Luana Carolina (6-1). The Chinese fighter fell short in her promotional debut against Gina Mazany at UFC Shanghai but then redeemed herself a year later at UFC Fight Night Beijing with an armbar submission over Lauren Mueller.
Her opponent, Carolina, earned her shot in the UFC through a decision win over Mabelly Lima on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series in 2018. She then made a successful debut against Priscila Cachoeira at UFC 237 last month in Rio de Janeiro, extending her winning streak to six in a row.
This will be the first trip to Asia in 2019 for the Las Vegas-based promotion. With the recently established UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai, it seems likely that events in mainland China will be the focus.
