Ahmed Mujtaba was handed a difficult looking matchup at ONE 163. The Pakistani featherweight was matched with BJJ black belt Abraão Amorim.

The Brazilian wasn’t just any BJJ black belt. He won gold at the IBJJF World Masters in both the gi and non gi tournaments but the Pakistani pulled off the seemingly impossible.

Mujtaba submitted the Brazilian with a triangle choke in the opening round at ONE 163:

Shocking outcome

Amorim wasn’t the only BJJ black belt to suffer defeat at ONE 163. His compatriot Bruno Pucci, who also happens to be the husband of reigning atomweight champion Angela Lee, dropped a decision to Kirill Gorobets.

But it was still shocking to see the BJJ black belt submitted by a Pakistani who is not renowned for his submission game. Mujtaba appears to hold a purple belt although a promotion might be in the pipeline after his performance tonight.

But Mujtaba had suffered submission losses on two of his previous five ONE Championship fights. If anything his ground game appeared to be an area of weakness that an elite opponent could potentially exploit.

But Mujtaba’s performance at the Singapore Indoor Stadium tonight will have well and truly changed that perception. If the 29 year old can submit a decorated BJJ black belt like Amorim then no-one in the division is safe from the Pakistani’s submission skills.

After the fight he begged Chatri Sityodtong for a $50,000 USD bonus. It would be no more than Mujtaba deserved as he improves his record to 10-2 and extends his ONE Championship winning streak to two.
