The bantamweight fight between John Lineker and Fabricio Andrade ended in a no contest. The challenger landed a hard knee to his opponent’s groin in the third round and the champion was unable to continue.

It was a devastating disappointment for Andrade who had done serious damage to Lineker’s eye. It was nearly swollen shut and seconds before the illegal strike the 24 year old had landed a knee to the midsection which had the champion screaming in agony.

At that stage Andrade could have finished the fight any way he wanted but he elected to follow up with a second knee and it landed squarely on the groin. Lineker’s cup was shattered and the UFC veteran was unable to continue.

One sided

With Lineker having missed weight the bantamweight title will presumably be vacant. But Andrade showed that he is good enough to beat the veteran over the course of three increasingly one sided rounds.

The younger man established his jab in the opening round and seemed to hurt Lineker with a right knee. The former champion responded with a takedown, a tacit admission that he was losing the striking exchanges.

Swollen shut

By the send of the second round Lineker’s eye was nearly swollen shut although he did land some of his trademark hooks, with a left hand hurting Andrade. By the start of the third it was clearly a matter of when, not if the doctor decided to stop the fight.

Lineker shot for another takedown but Andrade landed another of his step in knees and it took the life out of the UFC veteran. He could have finished the fight any way he wanted but elected to try and land another straight knee and this one was clearly low.

Lineker had five minutes to recover but his cup had been completely smashed, so even if the 32 year old had wanted to continue it probably wouldn’t have been logistically possible. Both men’s records remain the same and ONE Championship will presumably order a rematch with the vacant belt on the line.

Best of the rest

Danial Williams and Jeremy Miado went to war but it was the superior accuracy of the Filipino which ultimately won the day. He picked his opponent apart with straight punches and hooks before finiding the finish early in the third round.

Williams was ranked #5 heading into this contest but it is Miado who will be looking at facing a ranked opponent next. He did absorb some low kicks in the second round but never looked like losing and improves to 12-4 while his opponent drops to 6-2.

It was a ONE Championship debut to remember for Shamil Gasanov (13-0). He needed just over two minutes to submit Jae Woong Kim (12-6) with a rear naked choke.
