Jarred Brooks has made no secret of his desire to take on Demetrious Johnson. He is willing to face the former UFC flyweight champion under just about any ruleset by the sounds of it.

Johnson won gold at the IBJJF World Masters recently, competing as a brown belt. The competition was only open to submission specialists aged 30 and over which didn’t impress Brooks by the sounds of it.

The reigning ONE Championship strawweight champion addressed the issue in an Instagram video,

“What’s up Mighty Mouse, congratulations on beating those old men at the Masters Worlds”

Switching focus

Brooks has also switched focus to BJJ recently and is coming off of a loss to Mikey Musumeci at ONE Fight Night 13. He has talked about wanting to move up in weight to challenge Johnson for his title.

But Brooks would also be interested in facing ‘DJ’ in a submission grappling match,

“I think that you and I should do a submission grappling match. I think that Mikey (Musumeci) would beat you just as bad as me and I think that grappling just makes sense for you and I right now. We can tussle it out for those 125lbs and 135lbs championships.”

Not impressed

With Kairat Akhmetov serving a suspension after testing positive for PEDs there is no clear contender to face Johnson at flyweight. Perhaps that is what inspired the American to try competing in BJJ but Brooks was not impressed by his win at the IBJJF World Championships,

“I seen who you won against over at those Master Worlds. They were tomato cans and I think that I would give you twice as a good match and the wrestling , we are going to wrestle until someone gets taken down.”

Brooks is willing to face Johnson in either sport and makes it clear he is not ruling out an MMA fight,

“Mighty Mouse – meet me in the Circle, MMA or grappling let’s go get it!”

It is a fight which would make sense for both men. Brooks will be keeping a close eye on the strawweight bout between Joshua Pacio and Mansur Malachiev at ONE Fight Night 15, the winner of that will be in pole position for a shot at this title.

Johnson must be wondering where his next challenger will come from, having beaten #1 ranked Adriano Moraes twice in a row. A fight with Brooks would make a lot of sense for him and the two UFC veterans could be on a collision course.
