Superlek Kiatmoo9 has missed weight badly ahead of the ONE Friday Fights 34 headliner. He was supposed to be challenging Rodtang Jitmuangnon for his flyweight Muay Thai title.

But Superlek came in 5lbs overweight according to reports coming out today. The fight is set to go ahead but will now be a three round non title fight.

Under ONE Championship regulations fighters who miss weight normally lose 25% of their purse.

Shocking development

It was a shocking development because Superlek is the reigning ONE Championship flyweight title holder and has successfully made weight ahead of all 12 of his fights for the promotion.

It is not like he is coming off a long layoff either. The 27 year old has already fought four times this year and has made weight ahead off all of these flyweight fights.

In the buildup to this fight Superlek was talking about retirement. After his issues with the scales many fans were speculating that the reigning ONE Championship flyweight kickboxing champion might be having issues with his health.

Premature pose

Earlier in the day Superlek had posed with two belts over his shoulder in a pose that now seems very premature. One is the kickboxing title he already holds but he lost his chance to challenge for the Muay Thai strap on the scales.

ONE Friday Fights 34 is the biggest card the promotion has ever put on at Lumpinee Stadium and Superlek’s fight with Rodtang was set to be the main event. It will still be going ahead but has lost some of its allure without a title on the line.

Rodtang has had issues of his own at the scales but made weight ahead of this fight and agreed to fight Superlek despite the 5lbs difference. The latter will surely get an opportunity to explain what went wrong and whether he plans to continue fighting at flyweight, or fighting at all.

It is unusual for fighters to openly discuss the possibility of retirement in the build up to a big fight. There are bound to be questions about Superlek’s state of mind but all eyes will be on him when he faces Rodtang in what is now set to be a catchweight contest tomorrow.
