Carlos Alvarez’s third straight win at Lumpinee Stadium was also his quickest. The Filipino featherweight needed less than a minute to submit Phruethukorn Chaichongcharden at ONE Friday Fights 36.

It has been an incredible year for Alvarez who has stopped every single opponent he has faced. The 24 year old is the latest in a long line of exciting prospects to emerge from Team Lakay.

His wins this year have all come on the ground. At ONE Friday Fights 13 he put away Reza Abasi with a barrage of ground and pound towards the end of the second stanza.

At ONE Friday Fights 25 he was matched with another Iranian. Alvarez took on Sadegh Ghasemi and got the job done even quicker, locking in a D’Arce choke early in the second round.

Fast finish

Chaichongcharden, who was born in Thailand but is based in France barely got to throw a strike let alone make it into round two. Alvarez caught a kick and immediately worked for the takedown.

Initially the Thai fighter’s takedown offence was on point as he sprawled to maintain his centre of gravity. But Alvarez was able to clasp his hands together before picking Chaichongcharden up and taking him for a ride.

He slammed him down in the middle of the canvass but the Thai fighter was back on his feet within seconds. As he looked to break away Alvarez spotted the opportunity and grabbed onto Chaichongcharden’s neck.

From there he was ruthless in sinking in an anaconda choke. The squeeze was simply too much for Chaichongcharden who tapped at the 0:57 mark to give Alvarez his fastest finish yet.

With the win he improves to 4-0 and puts himself in contention for a performance bonus and a multi fight ONE Championship contract although announcements about either are still pending. Chaichongcharden drops to 3-2, the only other fighter to beat him was former Glory champion Cedric Doumbe.

Much has been made of the departures of Team Lakay stalwarts like Eduard Folayang and Joshua Pacio, who fights at ONE Fight Night 15 tomorrow. But the Baguio based gym seems to have a conveyor line of up and coming prospects ready to replace the former champions who have left.

Best of the rest
