Weili Zhang looks set to become the first Chinese fighter to ever challenge for a UFC belt. According to reliable reports she has been matched with reigning strawwweight champion Jessica Andrade in Shenzhen on August 31st.
Zhang (19-1) is currently #10 in the UFC’s official strawweight rankings making her a surprising choice for a title shot. But with a headline fight needed for UFC Fight Night Shenzhen matchmakers decided this was the perfect time to have the Chinese fighter challenge for the belt.
Andrade ( 20-6) is a veteran of 15 UFC fights and will be making the first defence of the 115lbs title she won by finishing Rose Namajunas with a huge slam at UFC 237. The Brazilian is currently riding a four fight winning streak.
Meanwhile Zhang has won 19 fights in a row, capturing titles with Asian promotions Kunlun Fight and Top FC. Since signing for the UFC she has beaten Danielle Taylor, Jessica Aguilar and Tecia Torres.
