Rin Nakai stopped Shoko Fujita with just 22 seconds remaining in the fight at Deep- Jewels 36. The UFC veteran extended her winning streak to seven with victory in Tokyo on Saturday.
She also booked a spot in the semi final of the Deep-Jewels 125lbs Grand Prix. The inexperienced Fujita struggled from the start and was on the receiving end of punches during the stand up exchanges and on her back during the first round.
Similar pattern
The second round followed a similar pattern and when Fujita tried to counter with a body kick Nakai caught it and took her down for a second time. She moved from side control to mount and attacked with ground and pound until the referee called off the contest.
With the win Nakai improves to 23-2-1 while Fujita drops to 2-2. The other tournament favourite, Shizuka Sugiyama, did not progress to the semi finals quite so smoothly.
Close contest
In the other semi final Sugiyama (21-6-1) edged out Mikiko Shimizu (3-2) by split decision with the five judges disagreeing on the outcome. The veteran can probably consider herself fortunate to have got the nod.
The other semi finalists will be Aoi Kuriyama and Tae Murayama. Both received a bye after their opponents withdrew.
