Rockie Bactol came to fight at ONE Warrior Series 9 but the Filipino found a more than willing adversary in the shape of Xie Wie. The Chinese fighter took his opponent’s best shots and fired straight, securing a thrilling first round stoppage win in this flyweight contest.
Bactol came charging out of his corner with a flying knee attempt. Wie read it and stepped aside and both men elected to stand in the pocket and trade punches.
It was Wie who landed the most devastating blows throwing a left hook followed by a straight right hand which sent Bactol stumbling backwards. The Filipino was badly hurt and his opponent swarmed all over him, attacking with punches, knees and elbows.
Bactol was backed into the corner of the ring and just covering up as Wie unloaded with punches. He never went down but the referee had seen enough and stepped in to wave off what had been a brief but thrilling contest.
The Filipino drops to 1-2 and it will be scant consolation for him to know he has played his part in one of the best fights in ONE Warrior Series history. Meanwhile Wie improves to 5-2 after scoring his fifth win of the year.
There was also a big win for Chang Ho Lee (5-0). The undefeated Korean dominated Micael De Jesus (8-3), finishing the BJJ black belt in the third round.
