There are quite a few fights out there for Angela Lee. She is currently 1-1 with reigning strawweight champion Xiong Jing Nan and a rubber match seems inevitable.
However the Hawaiian confirmed that she already knows the identity of her next opponent. Lee will be defending her atomweight title against Denice Zamboanga on an upcoming ONE Championship card.
The 23 year old has been keeping a careful eye on the undefeated Filipina,
“I think Denice is a talented rising star. She is a well-rounded mixed martial arts fighter and I’m excited to face her in the ONE cage,” Lee says.
Zamboanga is a year older than Lee. Having faced some real veterans like Mei Yamaguchi the champion is excited to face an up and coming contender,
“Denice is a young and hungry fighter. She is very well-rounded, and I feel like she is a part of the new generation of mixed martial arts. I’ve seen her previous fights, and she is constantly evolving her technique and fight game.”
Zamboanga earned her title shot with a one sided decision win over Yamaguchi at ONE: ‘King of the Jungle’. Lee was watching the fight and it’s fair to say the Filipina impressed the champion,
“I think Denice and her team came up with a very smart game plan, and she managed to execute that in the fight,” she said.
When and where the atomweight title fight takes place remains to be seen. ONE Championship recently announced a series of behind closed doors events in Singapore which will get underway next month.
However the coronavirus crisis is evolving on a daily basis with several countries introducing new flight restrictions. So Lee doesn’t know how long she will have to wait for the Zamboanga fight.
However the champion is adamant she will be taking the undefeated Filipina very seriously,
“Denice is definitely a dangerous fighter, and I won’t be underestimating her.”
