Garry Tonon has a title fight coming up this Friday. In the buildup the American has compared himself to one of the most fearsome heavyweight boxers of all time.

According to Tonon he is ‘the Mike Tyson of grappling’:

Tyson is one of the hardest hitting heavyweights of all time. He was blighted by personal problems throughout his career but still scored some of the most devastating KOs the sport has ever seen.

By contrast Tonon is a submission specialist but 53 of his 771 wins in jiu jitsu tournaments have come by way of submission. In comparison 44 of Tyson’s 50 victories as a boxer came by way of knockout so there are some parallels.

This Friday at ONE: ‘Lights Out’ the American will be competing in MMA, challenging Thanh Le for the featherweight title. His opponent has a reputation for hitting hard but Tonon will be looking to finish the fight inside the distance, just like ‘Iron Mike’ used to do!
