ONE Hero Series 6 took place in Shanghai this afternoon. The June installment of the monthly series featured a flyweight fight between seasoned veteran Huyixibai Chuhayifu and up and coming prospect Yong Hu and it was the latter who emerged victorious after three action packed rounds.
The only disappointment was that Hu prevailed by way of DQ after Huyixibai landed an illegal suplex in the closing stages of the fight. It was a disappointing finish for a fighter who had started strongly, landing a head kick in the opening seconds.
Hu took it well and responded with a right hand that sent his opponent stumbling backwards. Huyixibai quickly got to his feet and then scored a double leg takedown, taking the younger man’s back and locking in a body triangle.
Huyixibai was softening Hu up with punches to the body while trying to slip a wrist under his neck but couldn’t create an opening to secure the rear naked choke. His opponent eventually scrambled to safety and launched a flurry of punches.
Damage done
Huyixibai tried to answer the onslaught with overhand rights but Hu was landing with more accuracy and one of his punches opened up a cut. The action was paused at the very end of the opening round for the doctor to inspect the damage and this would be a feature of the fight.
At the start of the second stanza Huyixibai landed a low kick and Hu responded with a flurry of punches. The former was looking to land one big shot while the latter attacked with combinations to the body and head.
The fight was paused again while the doctor inspected the cut and after the restart both men came out swinging. Huyixibai was looking for takedowns and finally got one but it was late in the round and he couldn’t capitalize on the position.
Relentless pursuit
In the third Huyixibai was relentless in pursuit of the takedowns but Hu’s defence was on point. He finally succeeded in timing a kick and grabbing hold of the leg to get the fight to the floor but couldn’t do any damage from half guard.
Just when the action appeared to be slowing Hu complained of an eye poke and tried to get the fight paused. The referee wasn’t interested and, realizing the inferred infraction was going unpunished, he lost his temper and attacked with another barrage of punches.
With a minute remaining Hu looked to be on track for a decision win. But Huyixibai had not given up and he slammed ‘The Wolf Warrior’ to the floor with a huge suplex causing him to hurt his head.
Unfortunately the move is illegal under ONE Championship rules and Huyixibai was disqualified. He drops to 11-4-1 while Hu improves to 5-1 and now has three ONE Hero Series wins, putting him in contention for a shot at the big show.
ONE: ‘Legendary Quest’ is also set for Shanghai this weekend and features the promotional debut of Yoshihiro Akiyama.
