In a recent interview with Polish media Joanna Jedrzejczyk announced that she expected to rematch Weili Zhang. The two first fought at UFC 248 with the Chinese fighter winning by split decision.
According to MMA Junkie Jedrzejczyk plans to return to the octagon this year. She has not fought at all since the loss to Zhang, which received ‘fight of the year’ honours’ in 2020.
“Everyone thinks I’m not in the UFC anymore. I am, I just dropped out of the rankings, because I haven’t fought for a dozen or so months. But I’m coming back and fighting. It will probably be Zhang Weili.”
While Joanna Jedrzejczyk has been on the sidelines Zhang fought twice in 2021, although she also took a year off after that grueling five round war. Both are former UFC strawweight champions and, given that the first fight was a barnburner, a rematch would make sense.
For her part Zhang has suggested she might fight #2 ranked Carla Esparza next. The Chinese fighter might have lost her title after back to back defeats to Rose Namajunas but here are still plenty of interesting fights out there for her.
