This week was the Songkran festival in Thailand and various fighters were celebrating. Among them was Nat Wondergirl although she appears to have taken a trip to the beach instead of indulging in the traditional water fight.

Happy Songkran Day

More traditional

While Wondergirl chose an unconventional way to celebrate the Thai new year fellow ONE Championship fighter Lin Heqin had a more traditional Songkran. She appears to be training at Tiger Muay Thai and spent the day squirting her water festival.

Songkran is always celebrated in mid April and can last anything from one to seven days depending on which part of Thailand you are in. In Phuket the action only lasts for around 24 hours but it is intense with everyone indulging in a massive water fight.

This generally plays out to the background of pumping techno with sound systems set up on every street corner and water provided for everyone to refill.

Serious accidents

There is water fighting on just about every street corner in Thailand during Songkran and you get on a motorbike at your peril. Passers by will continuously attack vehicles with water and there are serious road accidents every year.

Trucks full of people will drive around throwing water at bystanders on the street but with temperatures soaring at this time of year in Thailand no-one really seems to mind getting wet.

It is traditionally a very colourful time of year with revelers wearing bright clothes. Stores will stock up on Hawaiian shirts in anticipation of the increased demand.

Tourist hotspot

ONE Championship’s Rika Ishige also celebrated Songkran but she went to one of the busiest streets in Bangkok. The 34 year old spent the day at Khao San Road which is the hub of backpacker activity in the country.

All the shops and stalls on the road close during the day and the street becomes one big water fight with tourists splashing and dancing from dusk until dawn. In some places in Thailand the festivities are ongoing while others are winding down but these ONE Championship stars all seem to have enjoyed the festival.
