ONE: ‘Century’ is scheduled for Tokyo on October 13th. As the name suggests, it looks set to be the 100th major card put on by the promotion, which held its inaugural event in 2011.
ONE Championship distinguishes between events using individual names, not numbers. Next week’s show in Indonesia will be the 92nd card that Chatri Sityodtong‘s promotion has put on, not including the ONE Warrior Series and ONE Hero Series events.
ONE: ‘A New Era’ was widely hailed as the best event in the history of the Asian MMA giant. The inaugural Tokyo card featured the likes of Shinya Aoki, Eddie Alvarez, Demetrious Johnson, Angela Lee and Aung La Nsang and attracted a sold out crowd to the Ryōgoku Kokugikan.
So it is fitting that ONE Championship‘s return to Tokyo should coincide with such a landmark occasion. One fight which has already been confirmed is a light heavyweight title match between Aung La Nsang and Brandon Vera.
Vera is the promotion’s reigning heavyweight champion but spent much of his career competing at 205lbs with the UFC. He will be dropping down a division to challenge La Nsang, who also holds the promotion’s middleweight title.
Both men will still be champions after ONE: ‘Century’ but only one will have the right to call themselves a two division title holder. Matchmakers are likely to pull out all the stops for this card making October 13th an essential date in the diary for any fan of Asian MMA.
