In a far reaching interview with the South China Morning Post (see it here) Chatri Sityodtong revealed ONE Championship has big plans for October. Among them is a middleweight title fight between Aung La Nsang and Reinier de Ridder.
According to the ONE Championship CEO some major announcements are in the pipeline,
“Next week we will announce the return of our mega events. We will announce some big things happening in October (and) Aung La will be defending his title.”
La Nsang had originally been scheduled to face Vitaly Bigdash at ONE: ‘Infinity’ 1 in February. However Chatri says that the number one challenger is now fit and ready to replace the Russian.
“His opponent he was going to defend against before the pandemic was Reinier, the undefeated Dutch fighter, but he was injured from and that’s why we went with Vitaly Bigdash.”
During the discussion with SCMP’s Nick Atkins the ONE Championship CEO also revealed that there was a possibility of a US event taking place later this year,
“A few things have to go our way before we decide to pull the final trigger (on the US event) but our local and global events are back in a big way. We have cracked it in a few countries (and) I’ll be making a formal announcement in the coming week.”
According to Chatri the title matches that were announced before the Covid-19 pandemic are still in the works. These include a heavyweight fight between Brandon Vera and Arjan Bhullar, a featherweight fight between Martin Nguyen and Thanh Le and a flyweight fight between Demetrious Johnson and Adriano Moraes.
