The rivalry between the Zamboanga siblings and the Lee siblings could be one to watch in 2022! In both families there is a male lightweight and a female lightweight (or two!) on the ONE Championship roster.
If Denice Zamboanga and Angela Lee win their fights at ONE: ‘X’ later this month they look set to face off in an atomweight title fight. But Drex Zamboanga has also thrown his name into the mix and made it clear that he would like a crack a Christian Lee,
“If possible, I would like to face Christian Lee. I’ve been watching his fights from way back, and I feel like we’d have an interesting match skill-wise,” he said.
Moving up
In 2020 he was competing as a flyweight. Zamboanga has moved up three weight classes bit he made light of the jump when beating Rahul Raju at ONE: ‘Full Circle’ last month. He admits it was difficult to make the transition to lightweight,
“At first, I struggled adjusting to lightweight. It’s not easy because I jumped three weight classes, but I had to maintain my speed. I focused on enhancing my speed and power during my training and loaded up on conditioning.”
Zamboanga needed just over a minute to finish the Singaporean and was happy to be back inside the cage after an extensive injury enforced break,
“I was able to maintain my training and executed my game plan very well. I’m very happy because it’s been two years since I last fought due to injury,” he said.
No problems
But while he has his sights set on a fight with the former lightweight champion Zamboanga admits he would also be willing to fight at featherweight,
“I would like to be in a higher division, either lightweight or featherweight, because I’m more comfortable fighting in these weight classes. I’m still relatively big in lightweight so there won’t be problems for me to remain in this division.”
