The new year is traditionally a quiet time in the Muay Thai world with so many of Bangkok’s residents leaving town during the holidays. But the first big card of 2020 has already been confirmed and it will take place in Phuket.
Rodtang Jitmuangnon will go up against Yodlekpetch Or Achariya in a battle between two aggressive, walk forward fighters who are both renowned for being heavy hitters. The matchup is set for Floresta in Central on January 31st.
2019 was a banner year for Rodtang who won eight fights of eight. His second decision win over Seksan Or Keanmuang earned the Rajadamnern ‘fight of the year’ award and he also claimed the ONE Championship flyweight title which he is set to defend for the second time on Friday.
Yodlekpetch has mixed fortunes last year. He won the Knockout super lightweight tournament in Japan and beat reigning Lumpinee welterweight champion Rafi Bohic in Thailand but suffered losses at the hands of Neunglanlek Jitmuangnon (twice) and Saengmanee Sathiangym.
No other fights are confirmed for this card at the time of writing. Rodtang’s involvement will presumably be dependent on him emerging unscathed from his fight with Jonathan Haggerty at ONE: ‘A New Tomorrow’ next week.
