Janet Todd is riding a six fight winning streak and has beaten nearly every single top ranked fighter in the atomweight Muay Thai and kickboxing divisions. However the American is not worried about running out of opponents.
In fact she already has her eye on a fighter who is yet to make their ONE Championship debut. Anissa Meksen was scheduled to fight on the postponed ONE: ‘Empower’ card and Todd would like to test her skills against the former Glory super bantamweight champion,
“She definitely has a reputation and was at the top at Glory. If I want to be the best in the world, that’s somebody that I should definitely fight,” Todd said.
Good match
Meksen’s strawweight kickboxing bout with Martine Michieletto was scheduled for ONE: ‘Empower’ That card is currently awaiting a new date after a surge in Covid-19 cases in Singapore.
Meksen has already stated that she plans to compete in ONE Championship’s atomweight division and Todd hopes the fight will happen further down the line,
“I think the matchup with her will be very good. She’s fast. She’s strong. She has good technique. She was the Glory champ,” Todd said.
Interim opportunity
The atomweight Muay Thai title is currently the property of Allycia Rodrigues. The Brazilian is one of the few top ranked atomweight fighters that Todd has not faced but is set to give birth to a baby later this year.
Reigning atomweight MMA champion Angela Lee is in a similar situation, she became a mother for the first time a few months ago. Todd is hoping that in Rodrigues’ absence she might have the opportunity to fight for an interim Muay Thai title.
Todd already challenged for that belt once. At ONE: ‘Call to Greatness’ in 2019 she dropped a decision to Stamp Fairtex in an atomweight Muay Thai title fight.
The American would bounce back to win her next six fight, getting revenge on Stamp with a win at ONE: ‘King of the Jungle’ that saw her crowned atomweight kickboxing champion.
Good challenge
If ONE Championship does decide to introduce an interim title in the Brazilian’s absence Todd could definitely see her and Meksen fighting for it,
“I think any fight with her would be good whether it’s in (a) Grand Prix or whether it’s (for) the kickboxing title or (an) interim Muay Thai belt. It would be a good challenge for me.”
With Meksen reluctant to compete at strawweight that is a fight which could end up happening sooner rather than later. For now everything is on hold due to Covid-19 but when the ONE Championship schedule resumes Todd is hoping to be matched with the French fighter.
