With its first show of 2019 in the books, AFC is now targeting three championship matchups for the next event happening on April 8th in Seoul.
AFC 11: ‘Challenge For New Champions’ will feature Moon Gi-Bum and Giacomo Lemos defending their belts against Lee Do-Gyeom and Lim Jun-Soo respectively as well as Son Sung-Won, who will compete for the interim welterweight strap.
Moon Gi-Bum (9-4), is the most successful champion in the promotion’s history and defended his crown for the second time at AFC 9 last December. Although the challenger Lee Min-Gu had a late surge, ‘Jigsaw’ dominated most of the fight and snatched up the unanimous decision. He has never tasted defeat in the Angel’s cage.
The title-challenger, Lee Do-Gyeom (6-2), has created a tremendous amount of buzz with his demolition of Japanese veteran Fumiya Sasaki in his promotional debut at AFC 10. The former URCC featherweight king was guaranteed a title shot with an impressive victory and the organization delivered on that promise.
Newly-crowned openweight champion Lemos (5-0) will also get a quick turnaround and face Lim (12-11). In the main event of AFC 10, Lemos made Lee Sang-Soo quit on the stool after the second round to take the vacant title all the way back to Brazil.
This will be Lim’s fourth straight championship fight for the organization. Despite being the inaugural champion, he has been finished in his last two bouts by Shakhmaral Dzhetpisov and Tilek Zheenbekov, both whom never defended the belt and were subsequently stripped.
In addition to these two championship tilts, an interim welterweight title will be introduced. Due to Bae Myung-Ho undergoing treatment for his serious back injury, Son Sung-Won (9-6) will get a crack at the title in his first appearance for the promotion. However, the Heat welterweight champion is yet to get confirmation on an opponent.
In other promotional news, AFC will be opening a brand-new studio for its developmental league, Angel’s Heroes Challenge, in the southern part of Seoul. At the venue on February 23rd, the first event will be held and fighters will compete for a chance to fight at Angel’s Heroes 1, which will serve as the preliminary card of AFC 11.
