Kim Jae Woong was clearly one win away from a title shot heading into last Friday’s ONE: ‘Only the Brave’. The Korean was the #1 contender and coming off a very impressive win over former champion Martin Nguyen.
But he pulled out of the fight at the very last minute and opponent Tang Kai knows exactly what he wants the matchmakers to do. He thinks they should just give the title shot to him,
“Kim Jae Woong, I hear you’re sick. I wish that you have a speedy recovery, but the fact is that you can’t fight anymore. So, I will take over the title shot. You should just rest.”
Cheeky request
The featherweight title will be on the line at ONE: ‘Lights Out’ with champion Thanh Le facing undefeated challenger Garry Tonon. So there is no rush to find the next contender in the division and Kai’s cheeky request looks unlikely to be granted.
But it surely won’t go down well with Woong who appears to have fallen ill on fight night. We haven’t heard anything from the Korean yet but this fight has been postponed twice now.
When they do finally face off it looks set to be a genuine grudge match. But Tang is almost certainly going to have to get past Woong if he wants that title shot.
